I Was Toiling for 50+ Hours a Week while Making Other People Rich... All with Nothing to Show for It.
Below is a pic of me at my last job in 2014. (What a sad dude.) But that was my reality in every single role, whether in sales, teaching test-prep for high-schoolers, or something I thought was more noble, like working at a church. No matter the job, I was overworked, under-valued, and resigned to "This is just life."
I didn't grow up rich. My parents worked hard but we struggled my whole life. In third grade, I had no lunch on a field trip because I was afraid to ask my mom for $5 because I knew we didn't have money. In high school, we moved four times in four years because we kept getting evicted. I didn't know any "successful" people, and I definitely didn't think I had any business sense in me.
The final straw was the day after Thanksgiving when I was in my late 30s. My boss asked me to work last-minute. I was already logging 50+ hours a week and we weren't even open that day. But I did what I was told and left my family to go to work. But something changed that day. When I got in the car for the hour commute up the NJ Turnpike, I said to myself:
"Never again."
I wanted more and was willing to work hard. I devoured books, cut distractions, and took action. Sure, I made some mistakes but I also made smart choices that propelled my success... and that's what I want to share on this upcoming series.
